About the Product

This vintage silver cream jug was produced by Grish Chunder Dutt Manufactory, Bhowanipore, Calcutta, a renowned Anglo-Indian silversmithing workshop active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The impressed maker's mark identifying the workshop remains visible on the base, confirming its origin from one of colonial India's most respected silver manufacturers.

The jug features exceptionally detailed hand-chased decoration depicting traditional Indian village life. One side showcases a bungalow-style residence surrounded by tropical palms and lush foliage, while the reverse illustrates figures engaged in domestic activities, creating a continuous narrative scene around the body. These richly textured landscapes are characteristic of the workshop's celebrated Anglo-Indian aesthetic.

The elegant bamboo-inspired handle reflects a design motif frequently employed by Calcutta silversmiths and adds visual balance to the vessel. The interior retains a warm gilt finish, originally applied to protect the silver and enhance its presentation. Combining fine craftsmanship with regional artistic influences, this piece represents the quality and distinctive style for which Grish Chunder Dutt's workshop became known among collectors of colonial Indian silver.

A fine example of documented Calcutta silver, this jug offers both decorative appeal and historical significance.
