The Hindu festival of Ganesha Chaturthi, also known as Ganesh Puja, lasts ten days and is usually observed in August or September. The festival honors Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of knowledge, wealth, and fortune.
The festival's opening day is called Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi. On this day, a clay Ganesha idol is placed inside a building or a place of worship. The following nine days are spent in idol worship. The idol is submerged in a river or lake on the tenth day during a ceremony known as Ganesha Visarjan.
Hindus celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi and Ganesha Visarjan for a variety of reasons. One reason is to obtain Ganesha's blessings for knowledge, wealth, and luck.
